How Physical Jet Fuel Arbitrage Actually Works

Jet fuel arbitrage is the business of moving physical aviation fuel from a market where the commodity can be acquired cheaply enough to another market where its realizable selling price is sufficiently higher to cover freight, storage, losses, financing, inspection, terminal charges and execution risk.

Traders sometimes describe this loosely as aero arbitrage. The important word is physical. A physical arbitrage trader is buying molecules, securing title, arranging transportation, maintaining aviation-fuel quality, financing inventory and delivering an acceptable product into another commercial market.

The trade is not simply buying a number called "Jet A-1" at $90 per barrel and selling another number at $100 per barrel.

The $10 headline spread can disappear through freight, terminal throughput, inspection, insurance, tank costs, linefill, financing, demurrage, quantity losses and specification differences before the cargo reaches the buyer.

Successful jet fuel arbitrage therefore comes from controlling a physical supply chain better than the market spread implies.

Futures and swaps can be used to hedge price exposure during this process. They do not move the fuel, preserve its specification or discharge the vessel.

Jet A-1 Is a Controlled Aviation Product

Physical jet arbitrage starts with specification.

ASTM D1655 establishes minimum property requirements for Jet A and Jet A-1 aviation turbine fuels. The specification addresses composition, volatility, fluidity, combustion characteristics, corrosion, thermal stability, contaminants and permitted additives.

International Jet A-1 supply also frequently references DEF STAN 91-091 and the Aviation Fuel Quality Requirements for Jointly Operated Systems, commonly called AFQRJOS or "Checklist Jet A-1."

The distinction matters commercially because an arbitrage trader cannot assume that kerosene available in one market is automatically acceptable for delivery into an aviation-fuel system elsewhere.

Joint Inspection Group standards cover the quality chain from manufacture and distribution through airport storage, hydrants and into-plane operations. Jet fuel can therefore satisfy a refinery specification at origin and still require controlled handling throughout the rest of the chain.

Jet A Is Not Automatically Jet A-1

This becomes especially relevant when arbitrage economics encourage movements from the United States into international Jet A-1 markets.

Jet A is extensively used in the United States. Jet A-1 is the dominant international grade. Among the important technical differences is the lower maximum freezing point required for Jet A-1.

The trader therefore needs product certified for the destination requirement rather than simply buying generic U.S. jet fuel and assuming it can be sold into any European or Asian airport system.

Specification compatibility can itself determine whether a regional arbitrage window is executable.

The Price Spread Is Only the Beginning

Physical arbitrage economics should be calculated on a destination netback basis.

The trade should be evaluated against the price the trader can actually realize at the destination, not a headline benchmark copied from a pricing screen.

Location, timing, cargo size and delivery basis determine whether the relevant benchmark is comparable to the trader's physical position.

The Main Jet Fuel Benchmarks

Jet fuel markets are generally priced around regional physical assessments rather than one universal world price.

Important commercial reference points include FOB Singapore jet fuel, Persian Gulf assessments, Northwest European CIF cargoes, European barges and U.S. Gulf Coast or Atlantic Coast markets.

Platts and Argus publish regional spot assessments used throughout physical contracts. IATA's Jet Fuel Price Monitor, for example, uses Platts regional spot assessments to construct its global and regional jet fuel price indices.

Physical purchase contracts are frequently expressed as a benchmark plus or minus a differential rather than a permanently fixed outright price.

A Singapore cargo might therefore be negotiated against Mean of Platts Singapore, while European destination economics are evaluated against a Northwest European cargo assessment. The trader is trading the relationship between those markets after transportation and execution costs.

Regrade Matters

Jet fuel competes with diesel and gasoil for refinery yield.

In Asian markets, traders closely watch the jet fuel regrade, meaning the value of jet fuel relative to gasoil.

A strong positive regrade encourages refiners to maximize jet production where technically possible. A weak or negative regrade can favor diesel or gasoil production instead.

Regrade therefore influences future physical supply and can change the amount of jet fuel available for export.

In April 2026, for example, S&P Global reported that a strong Asian regrade contributed to keeping the East-West jet arbitrage closed even while European jet prices were extremely high.

Freight Can Close an Apparently Open Arbitrage

Refined products normally move internationally on clean petroleum product tankers.

Medium Range tankers are common on regional and transatlantic refined-product routes. Larger LR1 and LR2 vessels are used where parcel size, port restrictions and voyage economics justify them.

Typical product lots can range from roughly 30,000 to 50,000 metric tonnes on MR vessels and substantially higher on LR vessels.

Freight is not constant.

Vessel availability, war-risk premiums, canal conditions, bunker fuel costs, weather, port congestion and competing product flows can cause the same geographical arbitrage to move from profitable to uneconomic within days.

A regional price spread is not an arbitrage window until a vessel can actually be fixed inside the economics.

A Real 2026 Jet Fuel Arbitrage

The disruption to Middle Eastern supply in early 2026 created an unusually clear example.

Northwest Europe is structurally dependent on imported jet fuel. Persian Gulf volumes had represented a major share of those imports before Middle East supply disruptions reduced available barrels.

European cargo prices strengthened sufficiently that an unusual U.S. Atlantic Coast-to-Europe arbitrage became economic.

S&P Global reported that approximately 57,000 metric tonnes, or around 450,000 barrels, loaded in New York Harbor in March 2026 for discharge in the United Kingdom in April.

These were the first U.S. Atlantic Coast-loaded jet cargoes reported heading to Europe since 2020.

S&P Global calculated an average March arbitrage incentive from the U.S. Gulf Coast to Northwest Europe of approximately $22.36 per barrel after freight, insurance and port fees. The exceptional European price dislocation had opened a route that is normally uneconomic.

A Physical Cargo Can Move Even When the Headline Arbitrage Is Closed

Physical flows should not automatically be interpreted as proof that a pure spot arbitrage is profitable.

Reuters reported in May 2026 that approximately 745,000 barrels of South Korean aviation fuel were moving toward France, the first Northeast Asian jet shipment to Europe since the Middle East conflict disrupted the route.

Market sources nevertheless estimated freight at roughly $40 per metric tonne while the Asia-Europe price spread was only around $20 to $30 per tonne. The general arbitrage remained uneconomic.

A cargo can still move because it was fixed earlier, because of contractual supply obligations, portfolio optimization, vessel positioning, storage economics or differences between one trader's actual purchase economics and the visible spot market.

This is an important distinction. Observing a vessel sailing from Korea to Europe does not automatically mean a new trader can purchase another cargo today and reproduce the economics.

An Illustrative Cargo Calculation

Consider a simplified 30,000 metric tonne Jet A-1 cargo.

At a working conversion of roughly 7.8 barrels per metric tonne, the parcel represents approximately 234,000 barrels. Actual conversion depends on measured density and temperature.

On approximately 234,000 barrels, $1.50 per barrel represents roughly $351,000 of gross trade margin before corporate overhead, tax and unexpected costs.

One extra day of demurrage, a freight repricing, an adverse benchmark movement or a destination differential weakening by $1.50 per barrel can remove the entire margin.

This example is illustrative. It demonstrates why a $6 or $7 regional price difference should never be represented as a $6 or $7 trading profit.

Storage Creates Time Arbitrage

Jet fuel arbitrage does not have to be geographical.

A trader can purchase prompt physical supply, place it into an approved terminal and sell it for later delivery when the forward value compensates sufficiently for storage, financing and inventory risk.

This is a physical time spread.

The economics depend on tank rent, throughput fees, minimum storage periods, linefill requirements, tank heels, financing and the forward price structure.

Aviation fuel adds another constraint: storage and handling must preserve the quality and traceability required for eventual aviation use.

Tank Access Is Commercially Valuable

Buying a cargo without having somewhere approved to receive it is not physical arbitrage.

Terminal access can become scarce when regional inventories rise or when a dislocation attracts numerous cargoes simultaneously.

A terminal agreement needs to address available capacity, throughput, nomination procedures, minimum quantities, contamination allocation, commingling, measurement, inspection rights and release procedures.

Traders also need to distinguish genuine storage rights from fabricated Tank Storage Receipts, fake injection documents and meaningless "tank allocation" documents circulating through petroleum brokerage chains.

Physical control of the product must be independently verifiable.

Jet Fuel Quality Has to Survive the Journey

Aviation fuel has a stricter quality chain than many ordinary middle distillates.

The trader needs appropriate Certificates of Quality and traceability from manufacture through transportation and storage. Depending on the operation, recertification or additional testing can be required after movements, commingling or changes in custody.

EI/JIG 1530 specifically addresses quality assurance from manufacture through storage and distribution to airports. JIG 2 covers airport depots and hydrants. JIG 1 covers into-plane fueling.

This means there is an enormous commercial difference between owning technically acceptable kerosene in a generic petroleum tank and owning aviation fuel that can enter a recognized airport supply chain.

Quality history can determine liquidity.

Contamination Risk Can Destroy the Cargo Economics

Water, particulate contamination, incompatible additives and contamination from previous cargoes can make fuel unsuitable for aviation use.

Vessel tank history therefore matters. Terminal tank history matters. Pipeline interface management matters.

A trader can purchase on-specification Jet A-1 at origin and create a serious loss if the product is contaminated during transportation or storage.

Cargo insurance does not eliminate the operational need for appropriate inspection, tank cleanliness, sampling and custody procedures.

Airport Supply Is a Separate Commercial Layer

An arbitrage trader should distinguish selling jet fuel into a wholesale terminal from delivering aviation fuel to an airline's wing.

Large airports can have dedicated joint-venture fuel storage, pipelines and hydrant systems. Suppliers need access to the relevant infrastructure or must sell to an entity that already has it.

At a major airport, fuel can move from an import or refinery terminal through pipeline infrastructure into an airport fuel depot, through a hydrant network and finally into the aircraft using an into-plane operator.

Throughput rights, airport concession arrangements and airline supply contracts therefore have independent value.

The best physical arbitrage destination is not necessarily the airport showing the highest retail uplift price. The trader needs a contractual path through which its fuel can actually enter that market.

Title Transfer Has to Match the Physical Chain

The purchase and sale contracts should state precisely when title and risk move.

FOB, CIF and CFR terms affect who arranges carriage and when risk transfers, but the full contract still needs commodity-specific provisions covering quantity determination, quality, inspection, laytime, demurrage, claims and payment.

Back-to-back contracts should be compared clause by clause.

A trader that buys with a broad quality acceptance provision and sells under a much tighter rejection clause has created an exposure even if its nominal purchase and sale volumes match exactly.

Demurrage Can Wipe Out a Thin Spread

Product tankers are contracted with defined laytime.

If loading or discharge takes longer than allowed, demurrage can become payable.

Port congestion, terminal scheduling, inspection delays, documentation problems and unavailable tanks can therefore turn an apparently profitable cargo into a loss.

Physical traders price operational optionality because perfect port execution cannot be assumed.

Quantity Losses Matter

A 30,000-tonne purchase does not necessarily produce exactly 30,000 tonnes invoiced to the final buyer.

Measurement differences, temperature corrections, pipeline interfaces, tank heels and normal operational losses can create quantity differences throughout the chain.

The contract needs an agreed quantity-determination method and tolerances.

Even a fraction of 1% becomes commercially relevant on a multimillion-dollar cargo.

Financing the Arbitrage

Physical arbitrage consumes working capital.

The source refinery can require payment before or shortly after loading. Ocean transportation can take weeks. The destination buyer may only pay after discharge, certification and final documentary acceptance.

Somebody must finance that interval.

Financing structures can include transaction-specific purchase finance, documentary letters of credit, borrowing-base facilities, inventory finance, supplier credit and receivables finance after delivery.

The facility should follow the physical trade cycle rather than forcing the cargo into an unrelated repayment schedule.

A Self-Liquidating Trade Still Needs Equity

Commodity finance is frequently described as self-liquidating because the sale of the financed cargo is expected to repay the lender.

That does not mean a lender will finance 100% of every speculative arbitrage cargo.

The lender can require trader equity, margin, controlled disbursement, collateral management, assignment of sale proceeds and minimum trade economics.

The lender also wants to know what happens if the arbitrage closes before the cargo reaches destination.

A trader capable of holding the commodity, redirecting the vessel or selling into an alternative market is a stronger credit than a trader whose only repayment plan depends on one buyer and one destination.

Hedging Protects the Physical Margin

Physical jet traders often hedge price exposure while the cargo is moving.

A trader buying physical fuel today and selling it several weeks later may use swaps or other derivatives referenced to the appropriate regional benchmark.

The hedge can reduce outright price risk. It cannot eliminate basis risk if the physical purchase, hedge and destination sale reference different pricing points.

A trader can therefore hedge crude or middle-distillate exposure successfully and still lose money because the destination jet differential collapses.

Hedging is part of physical margin protection, not a substitute for understanding the cargo.

Sanctions Can Redraw the Arbitrage Map

Two molecules with the same laboratory specification can have different commercial values because of origin and compliance history.

European restrictions on Russian-origin petroleum products and later restrictions affecting products made from Russian crude have changed where certain middle-distillate barrels can be delivered.

Traders therefore examine refinery origin, crude provenance where relevant, vessel history, ship-to-ship transfers, beneficial ownership, insurers and payment counterparties before assuming a cargo can enter the destination market.

The Arbitrage Can Close While the Ship Is at Sea

A 20-day voyage creates a large window for market conditions to change.

A refinery can restart. Another importing region can suddenly weaken. Airline demand can disappoint. A competing fleet of cargoes can arrive simultaneously. Freight can move. A war-risk premium can disappear.

Traders therefore distinguish an open arbitrage from a locked arbitrage.

An open arbitrage leaves some part of the downstream price or physical sale exposed.

A locked trade has a contracted purchase, freight and sale structured sufficiently tightly that most of the expected margin has already been established.

The second structure is normally much easier to finance.

Optionality Is Valuable

Large trading houses rarely think of a cargo as having only one possible destination.

A vessel loaded in the Middle East or Asia can potentially have several destination markets if specifications, contracts and shipping economics permit.

Destination optionality allows the trader to redirect the physical molecule toward the strongest netback as markets change.

Optionality can also exist in storage, delivery timing, blending and pricing windows.

Traders with no alternative buyer, no alternative terminal and no ability to finance another 30 days of inventory have far less optionality and therefore greater execution risk.

Buyer Contracts Need to Match Supplier Contracts

Back-to-back physical trading is only as strong as the relationship between the two contracts.

Traders should compare:

  • grade and specification;
  • quantity tolerance;
  • pricing period;
  • Incoterms;
  • load and discharge windows;
  • quality determination;
  • quantity determination;
  • inspection company;
  • title transfer;
  • payment conditions;
  • demurrage allocation;
  • sanctions representations;
  • force majeure;
  • claims periods; and
  • governing law.

A one-day pricing mismatch can matter when the benchmark is moving several dollars per barrel.

The Biggest Mistake Is Starting With a Cheap Seller

Physical arbitrage should start with a market dislocation, not an unsolicited offer claiming extraordinary Jet A-1 discounts.

The professional process is to identify a measurable regional or temporal spread, establish destination demand, calculate transportation economics and then source executable physical supply.

The weak process starts with somebody claiming to have 500,000 barrels of Jet A-1 at an implausible discount and then invents a resale strategy around the alleged supply.

Who Makes Money in Jet Fuel Arbitrage?

The strongest physical traders already control parts of the infrastructure required to execute the trade.

They have refinery relationships, term supply, tank capacity, vessel relationships, credit lines, derivatives access, inspection procedures and downstream customers.

This lowers the cost of moving each marginal cargo and creates optionality that a first-time intermediary does not possess.

A smaller trader can still participate, but the commercial margin has to compensate for the additional cost of outsourcing infrastructure and obtaining finance.

Physical arbitrage rewards execution capability. Access to a cheap-looking PDF offer is not execution capability.
